excerpt - " ...... Steve Gulley gives us a very solid set of bluegrass with a traditional underpinning. In keeping with his solo album's title, Sounds Like Home has handpicked songs that reflect his musical upbringing, heritage and heart. Besides the nods to his father's keystone repertoire, Gulley selected four gospel numbers from the old "Red Book" Baptist hymnal. Vic Graves provides spiritually-infused reverence in the lead vocalizing on "No Not One." Arranged as a vocal quartet, "Prepare To Meet Thy God" also features a cameo appearance by J.D. Crowe and is one of two songs on the disc with Dale Ann Bradley's vocal harmony. A featured vocalist at Renfro Valley Barn Dance, Steve's wife Debbie provides another silky smooth feminine touch to the album on the country duet, "My Elusive Dreams." Other secular offerings include "The Grand Tour" (a hit for George Jones), "Another Day" (a Reno & Smiley nugget), and Steve's self-penned "Mountain Heart" (about a love of his east Tennessee mountain home). "~SLIPCUE.COM "Super-sweet, melodic bluegrass from a former member of Doyle Lawson's Quicksilver, and former lead singer of Mountain Heart. SInger-guitarist Steve Gulley plays it pure and clear, with several new, original numbers and a bunch of classics from the canon. Some of his old buddies chime in here as well, including the fellas from Mountain Heart, Lawson, and Dale Ann Bradley, who adds some gorgeous harmony and duet vocals on a couple of tunes. This disc is solid from start to finish -- mostly traditional, mostly secular, though with some well-chosen gospel material, and fine pickin' throughout. If you want any proof of the strength of the independent bluegrass scene, look no further. Records like this give lots of hope for the future... Come to think of it... the present sounds mighty nice as well! "

"Steve Gulley’s sweeping, soulful vocals and explosive guitar playing were prominently featured during his stints with Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver and Mountain Heart, but he’s even more effective and demonstrative on his own during country, gospel and bluegrass numbers on his new solo release.

The finest spiritual numbers include “Prepare To Meet Thy God” and “Nearer My God To Thee,” while the best country versions are the masterful cover of “The Grand Tour” and “My Elusive Duets,” a soaring duet with both Dale Ann Bradley and Debbie Gulley. His original “It Ain’t The Leaving” and Reno and Smiley’s “Another Day” are among the bluegrass pieces, and Gulley’s guest list includes Adam Steffey on mandolin, Jim VanCleve on fiddle, J.D.
